Understanding Pre-Emergence vs Post-Emergence Herbicides

The Difference That Timing Makes

Choosing between pre-emergence and post-emergence herbicides is one of the most important decisions in a weed management programme.

Pre-Emergence Herbicides

Applied to the soil before weeds germinate. They work by forming a chemical barrier in the upper soil layer that inhibits seed germination and early root/shoot development.

Key requirements:

• •Soil moisture is critical for activation
• •Apply within 3 days of planting
• •Do not disturb the soil after application (breaks the barrier)
• •Effective for 3–8 weeks depending on product and rainfall

Post-Emergence Herbicides

Applied after weeds have emerged. Selectivity is critical — some post-emergence herbicides are selective (safe to the crop) while others are non-selective.

• •Good soil moisture promotes weed growth and product uptake
• •Avoid spraying in extreme heat or drought stress
• •Add recommended adjuvant to improve uptake

Best Practice: Use Both

For maximum weed control, use a pre-emergence followed by a post-emergence programme. The pre-emergence knocks out the first flush; post-emergence catches escaped weeds.
