Safe Handling of Agrochemicals — PPE Guide

Why PPE Matters

Agrochemicals are powerful tools that can cause serious harm if handled incorrectly. Proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is your first line of defence against exposure.

Minimum PPE Requirements

For all pesticide handling:

• •Long-sleeved overalls (cotton or chemical-resistant)
• •Rubber or nitrile gloves
• •Rubber boots / gumboots
• •Safety glasses or goggles

For high-toxicity products (Category I & II):

• •Add: Full face shield
• •Add: Respirator with organic vapour cartridge
• •Add: Chemical-resistant apron

Mixing and Loading

The highest exposure risk is during mixing and loading — not during spraying. The product is undiluted at this stage.

1. •Always add product TO water (not water to product)
2. •Stand upwind when mixing
3. •Do not mix in enclosed spaces
4. •Have water nearby for emergency washing

After Spraying

• •Remove PPE before entering home or vehicle
• •Wash all PPE with soap and water after each use
• •Shower and change clothing before eating or drinking
• •Store PPE separately from living areas

Emergency First Aid

Skin contact: Remove clothing, wash with soap and water for 15–20 minutes. Eye contact: Flush with clean water for 15–20 minutes. Ingestion: Do not induce vomiting. Seek medical attention immediately. Emergency: Call Drug and Toxicology Information Services: 0242 307148

Empty Container Disposal

Triple rinse method:

1. •Invert container over spray tank, drain 30 seconds
2. •Add water (1/3 container volume), shake, add to tank
3. •Repeat twice more
4. •Puncture and flatten — do not reuse for any purpose
