Spray adjuvants are additives used in pesticide formulations or added to the spray tank to improve the biological performance or physical handling characteristics of the spray solution. The right adjuvant can significantly improve control, while the wrong one can reduce efficacy or cause crop damage.
These directly improve the biological activity of pesticides:
Non-Ionic Surfactants (NIS)
Methylated Seed Oil (MSO) / Crop Oil Concentrate (COC)
Silicone Surfactants (Organosilicones)
These improve the handling or storage characteristics of the spray:
Ammonium Sulphate (AMS)
Anti-Drift Agents
Stickers/Spreader-Stickers
| Pesticide Type | Recommended Adjuvant |
|---|---|
| ACCase herbicide (fenoxaprop, fluazifop) | MSO or COC (REQUIRED) |
| ALS herbicide (sulfonylureas) | NIS (often recommended) |
| Contact herbicide (paraquat, diquat) | NIS |
| Systemic fungicide | NIS or silicone |
| Protectant fungicide (mancozeb) | Spreader-sticker in rain |
| Glyphosate (hard water) | AMS 1â2% |
| Foliar insecticide | NIS |
