Sprayer Calibration: A Step-by-Step Guide

Accurate sprayer calibration is fundamental to effective pest and disease management. An incorrectly calibrated sprayer can under-dose (poor control) or over-dose (crop damage, increased cost, environmental impact). Calibration should be done at the start of each season and whenever nozzles, pressure, or tractor speed are changed.

Why Calibration Matters

• •Pesticides are registered at specific application rates (L/ha or kg/ha of active ingredient)
• •The application volume (L/ha water) affects coverage and efficacy
• •Under-application leads to sub-lethal doses, poor control, and resistance risk
• •Over-application wastes money and increases environmental load

Step-by-Step Calibration (Boom Sprayer)

1. Check Nozzle Condition

• •Inspect all nozzles for wear, blockages, and damage
• •Replace nozzles that deviate more than ±10% from their rated output
• •Rinse the boom thoroughly and check for blocked strainers

2. Determine Application Speed

• •Mark out a 100 m course in the field
• •Time how long it takes to travel 100 m at the gear and throttle setting you will use
• •Calculate speed: Speed (km/h) = 360 / time (seconds)

3. Measure Nozzle Output

• •Catch the output from each nozzle for exactly 1 minute at your target pressure
• •Record the volume (mL/min) from each nozzle
• •Average the outputs (discard and replace nozzles >10% off average)

4. Calculate Application Volume (L/ha)

Formula: Application Volume (L/ha) = (Nozzle output (L/min) × 600) / (Nozzle spacing (m) × Speed (km/h))

Example:

• •Nozzle output: 1.2 L/min
• •Nozzle spacing: 0.5 m
• •Speed: 8 km/h
• •L/ha = (1.2 × 600) / (0.5 × 8) = 720 / 4 = 180 L/ha

5. Adjust to Target Volume

To increase L/ha: slow down, or increase pressure, or use a higher-output nozzle To decrease L/ha: speed up, or reduce pressure, or use a lower-output nozzle

6. Calculate Chemical Rate

Formula: Product amount per tank = (Tank capacity × Label rate) / Application volume (L/ha)

Example:

• •Tank: 400 L
• •Label rate: 2 L product / 200 L water
• •Product per tank = (400 × 2) / 200 = 4 L product per 400 L tank

Backpack Sprayer Calibration

1. •Mark a 10 m × 10 m = 100 m² plot
2. •Fill knapsack with clean water; note level
3. •Spray the plot at your normal walking speed and pump rate
4. •Measure water used; multiply × 100 for L/ha
5. •Adjust accordingly

Calibration Frequency

Recalibrate when:

• •Changing nozzle type or size
• •Changing application speed
• •After 50,000 ha of spraying (nozzle wear)
• •At start of each season as a routine check
